After more than a year of intensive efforts Ostrava Leos Janacek Airport received a certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Authority for CAT II operations in low visibility conditions. This means, in simple terms, that the airport’s 3500 m long runway is equipped to receive aircraft even in extremely low visibility conditions, such as fogs. Having completed the whole system, Ostrava Airport has become the second best equipped airport in the country, following Prague’s Ruzyně. At the same time, the airport becomes a backup airport for Vienna and Prague.
The total costs of improving the technical characteristics of the runway amounted to nearly CZK 115 million and the airport funded the project from its own resources.
